Fluoride is an important mineral that helps prevent tooth decay in children and adults. We offer topical fluoride treatments to all of our patients because we believe that it plays an important role in the prevention of cavities.
Some of the benefits of fluoride:
- In the earliest stages of tooth decay, fluoride can help repair the damaged areas before they become large cavities
- In children, during tooth development, fluoride integrates with the surface of the teeth and makes them more resistant to decay
- Tooth decay starts with demineralization of the enamel surfaces of the teeth. Fluoride help remineralize these enamel surfaces so that cavities do not develop
During your exam, the doctor or hygienist will offer you a fluoride treatment. This treatment is a varnish that is painted onto the teeth after your cleaning. We recommend avoiding food and hot liquids for 2 hours after your fluoride varnish treatment to allow optimal uptake of fluoride by the teeth.
