Sealants are a protective coating that is painted into the grooves and pits of permanent molar and premolar teeth. Sealants help fill these deep grooves and pits so that plaque and bacteria cannot get stuck in them and cause decay. Sealants are a preventive treatment that is usually covered by insurance for all children. We recommend placing sealants on children as soon as their permanent molars erupt, around  six years of age and again around 12 years of age. If a patient is particularly prone to getting cavities or their teeth have very deep grooves or pits, we will also recommend sealants in the premolar teeth.
